Learn how to choose the right Halo sectional matrix bands for your posterior restorations. Compare Original vs Firm varieties, band thickness, and clinical trade-offs.
Quick answer
For ideal interproximal contacts with minimal finishing, choose Halo Original bands for standard posterior restorations and Halo Firm bands when you need extra stiffness for deep subgingival margins or heavy proximal boxes.
Original vs Firm: the key trade-off
Halo Original bands are ultra-thin and flexible, conforming easily to the tooth anatomy and producing tight contacts with less force. They are ideal for most Class II restorations where the gingival margin is supragingival or just slightly subgingival.
Halo Firm bands offer greater stiffness, which helps resist deformation when packing composite into deep proximal boxes or when the gingival margin is significantly subgingival. The trade-off is that Firm bands may require slightly more adaptation time and can feel less forgiving on very convex surfaces.
Band thickness and contact tightness
Both Original and Firm bands are made from ultra-thin stainless steel, but the Firm variety is marginally thicker to provide its extra rigidity. This difference is subtle; neither band will require significant finishing adjustment compared to thicker conventional matrices.
If your priority is the absolute tightest contact with the least finishing, Original bands are the better choice. If you need the band to hold its shape during bulk-fill placement or when using a ring that applies heavy separation, Firm bands are more predictable.
How to choose: decision rules
- Restoration type: Use Original bands for standard Class II restorations with supragingival or shallow subgingival margins. Use Firm bands for deep subgingival margins or when the proximal box extends more than 2 mm below the gingival crest.
- Composite placement technique: If you use bulk-fill composites that require firm matrix resistance to prevent bulging, choose Firm bands. For incremental layering with a conventional composite, Original bands provide easier adaptation.
- Ring compatibility: Both band varieties work with standard sectional matrix rings. Firm bands hold their shape better when a ring applies high separation force; Original bands may collapse if the ring is overtightened. Test a single ring with both band types on a typodont to feel the difference in stiffness before committing to a bulk order.
- Finishing time: Original bands typically require less finishing because they produce a thinner flash. Firm bands may leave a slightly thicker flash at the gingival margin, adding 10–20 seconds of finishing per surface.
Product facts
- Halo™ Sectional Matrix Bands: Halo sectional matrix bands are made from ultra-thin stainless steel for ideal contacts and reduced finishing time. Available in Original and Firm varieties. You can choose the band stiffness that matches your clinical situation without sacrificing the ultra-thin profile that minimizes post-operative finishing.

Halo™ Sectional Matrix Bands
Who should choose which?
Best for
- Clinicians who prioritize maximum contact tightness and minimal finishing time
- Practices that treat a high volume of standard Class II restorations
Not ideal for
- Clinicians who exclusively work with deep subgingival margins and need maximum band rigidity
- Situations where the matrix must resist heavy separation forces without any deformation
