Learn when to apply PermaSeal penetrating composite sealer to prevent staining and wear on polished composites, plus practical decision rules.

Quick answer

Use PermaSeal penetrating composite sealer after polishing any direct composite restoration to seal micro-irregularities that cause staining and wear—especially on posterior teeth where occlusal forces are highest.

Why polishing alone is not enough

Even the finest polishing discs leave microscopic surface irregularities. These voids trap biofilm, food pigments, and abrasive particles, leading to premature staining and surface wear. PermaSeal fills those gaps with a low-viscosity resin that penetrates into the composite surface, creating a smooth, sealed finish.

When to skip the sealer

PermaSeal is not indicated for pre-polish surfaces or as a substitute for proper finishing. If the composite has not been polished to a high gloss, the sealer may not bond effectively. It is also unnecessary on restorations that will be immediately covered by a crown or veneer.

Decision rules for PermaSeal use

  • When to apply: Apply PermaSeal immediately after the final polishing step on any direct composite restoration. The surface must be clean, dry, and uncontaminated by saliva or hemostatic agents.
  • Which restorations benefit most: Posterior composites (Class I and II) benefit most because occlusal forces accelerate wear. Anterior composites also benefit when the patient has a history of staining or heavy coffee/tea consumption. Prioritize posterior restorations for the greatest reduction in wear.
  • Application tip: Apply a thin, even layer with a microbrush, let it sit for 20 seconds, then light-cure according to manufacturer instructions. Avoid pooling in deep pits or fissures. Thin layers cure more completely and leave a smoother finish.
